Community Engagement

In summer 2013, USC Civic Engagement scheduled workshops at Hazard Park to present information to the community on proposed USC Health Sciences Campus street beautification and building improvement projects.  We committed to an outreach process that included the surrounding communities, provided useful information, and encouraged community input regarding the proposed projects.

From the presentations and discussions with community members, we consistently heard the concern for preserving open space in the park area, and the desire for the Norfolk Street extension to be completed on USC-owned land instead of on city- owned land in order to maintain the city-owned land as an open space area.  We have responded by meeting with the District 14 council office to present an alternative street location on USC land, and we are now working with the council office to determine the feasibility of constructing the road immediately to the north of Hazard Park on university property.

The outreach process is continuing, and USC Civic Engagement has made additional presentations at local schools, chambers of commerce and community organizations.  Community and neighborhood organizations that would like to hear about and comment on the projects may contact us by email at hsccp@usc.edu to schedule a presentation or get more information about the projects.  The partnership between the university and the community is very important to the success of these projects.  Community input provides information needed to make these projects reflect to stakeholder desires.

We hope local stakeholders will support the effort to move the Norfolk Street extension, and will continue to participate in our ongoing community outreach as our improvement projects progress.
